Colon Cancer Awareness Month
March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month! The entire team at Gastroenterology Associates of Brooklyn is celebrating and bringing awareness to colon cancer this month. Colon cancer, also referred to as colorectal cancer when it involves the rectum, is a type of cancer that originates in the colon, the longest part of the large intestine. This malignancy typically begins as small, benign (noncancerous) clumps of cells called polyps that form on the inside of the colon. Over time, some of these polyps can become colon cancers. Polyps may be small and produce few, if any, symptoms, which is why doctors recommend regular screening tests to help prevent colon cancer by identifying and removing polyps before they turn into cancer.
The prognosis and treatment of colon cancer depend on the stage of the cancer, the size and location of the tumor, and the patient’s overall health. Treatment options include surgery to remove the cancer, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted drug therapy, and immunotherapy. Early detection through screening is crucial for improving outcomes, as it can significantly increase the chance of successful treatment and survival.
